Kern Brantley

Performing in Aretha’s Jazz Café as his touring schedule permits, Kern serves as the bassist and musical director for some of the biggest names in music today. His extensive resume includes work with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige, Ne-Yo, Destiny’s Child, Chris Brown, Chinese superstar JJ Lin, and many more. He has over 100 recording credits that include Grammy-winning and multi-platinum selling albums. Kern cites his Detroit upbringing and influences with the inspiration and direction for his style & mastery of the electric bass.

Gonzilla Revue

Gonzilla Revue is hosted by Detroit grown funk artist Gabe Gonzalez. His career has included multiple world tours with George Clinton and his own group - The Enemies. You can catch him on drums at Gonzilla Revue. Other featured artists will be Phil Hale (Thornetta Davis, Skeeto's Funhouse) on keys, Rick Mickens on Bass, and FNR Recording Artist Ms.Coko Buttafli and Paul Mr. Entertainer on vocals.

Aretha's Jazz Jam

This Sunday, shift gears to get to Aretha's Jazz Cafe for a jam session. From 6-9pm you can eat, drink, play, sing, or all of the above for absolutely free!

The jam session has always occupied an important place in the history of jazz education, giving young musicians the open-access training they need to develop their craft while learning from more experienced peers. 

Students develop the confidence needed to survive the night, playing different tunes in unfamiliar keys, with difficult tempos, in front of an audience, oftentimes alongside virtual strangers – they begin to speak the language that only other jazz players understand.

The Frank McComb Independent Artist Institute (FMIAI) will be holding its first master class on January 25 at Aretha's Jazz Cafe. Frank McComb will be holding seminars internationally to teach of his personal experiences as an independent recording artist. Come, sit, listen and take notes as one of the most successful independent recording artist shares his story of surviving in the music industry. Sit with Frank as he mentors on starting your own record label, recording and producing, and understanding the business for yourself. Whether you're just starting out or just getting back into the industry, this class is designed to be real, transparent and empowering.
