Aretha's Jazz Jam

This Sunday, shift gears to get to Aretha's Jazz Cafe for a jam session. From 6-9pm you can eat, drink, play, sing, or all of the above for absolutely free!

The jam session has always occupied an important place in the history of jazz education, giving young musicians the open-access training they need to develop their craft while learning from more experienced peers.

Students develop the confidence needed to survive the night, playing different tunes in unfamiliar keys, with difficult tempos, in front of an audience, oftentimes alongside virtual strangers – they begin to speak the language that only other jazz players understand.

WHAT IS GRiZMAS?
Music saved his life, but Detroit built him. Now GRiZ is doing all he can to give back to his community by helping to develop a support network for creative kids in a city ripe for artistic renaissance. By turning the benefit of this cause towards fostering the spirit of Detroit, GRiZ continues to set the intention towards further development in his own backyard. Growing up learning music within the progressive container of Detroit’s music scene changed his life, so as a continuation of his roots, he is now working with Seven Mile to help kids in the city flourish as he did. 100% of the proceeds from every charitable GRiZMAS event go back to our cause!

Foxxy Gwenday Wednesdays presents K'Jon

Detroit-born singer/songwriter K'Jon has seemingly come out of nowhere into the R&B spotlight, but it took years of hard work to become and "overnight success."

K'Jon was singing in his native Motor City since he was eight years old.  But even as he continued to polish his craft as a tenn and young adult, he never got a major break. Then, his song "Miami" was featured on the soundtrack of the movie 2Fast2Furious in 2004, and the exposure won for him gigs opening for acts like Ne-Yo and Raheem DeVaughn.  He also began releasing his own albums independently, building a slow burn.

"...their repertoire digs deep into the genre, as a read-through of the titles will attest. They take a swing at Roy Milton, Buddy Johnson and T-Bone Walker classics as well as contemporary material from the Stray Cats and Detroit pianist Bill Heid. (Bob) Conner, the man with the reet pleat and steady beat, has done it right."
- Jim Gallert / Detroit / March, 2000
