A Man Can Change #15: Waxing/Waning

Joel Fluent Greene is a Detroit based Poet, MC and promoter who had been supplying stages for up and coming performers and events for the public for over 17 years. He has performed and shared the stage with artists like The Roots, Eminem, Chrisette Michelle, Common, Talib Kweli, Big Sean, Ledisi, Raheem Devaughn, J Dilla, Wyclef Jean, and many more. He is also one of the main architects of the current Detroit open mic poetry scene who began his career in performance hosting at Detroit's Cafe Mahogany. During Fluent's 3 years as host of its legendary Tuesday night open mics, Cafe Mahogany saw local talents, in town celebrities, and future greats come through its doors. Although closed since 2000, Mahogany remains a sacred place in Detroit Poetry lore and has inspired countless poems, a play, and even a song by soul singer, Dwele.

Over the years Fluent has also helped nurture a love of poetry for Detroit area students, this includes helping spearhead a collaboration between Detroit's Music Hall and local McDonald’s franchises where 160,000 “Words and Rhythms of the D” books were distributed to 60+ McDonald's restaurants, showcasing the poetry of Detroit High School Students. Whether its performing, providing opportunities for others or hosting legendary events, Joel Fluent Greene is a Detroit original who is committed to our city.
