Multi-woodwind-instrumentalist and Detroit native Kasan Belgrave holds a unique stance as one of the young torchbearers of the next generation of jazz. He also strives to continue passing down the knowledge and exposure of jazz music to the youth, just like his father, late trumpeter Marcus Belgrave.

Multi-woodwind-instrumentalist and Detroit native Kasan Belgrave holds a unique stance as one of the young torchbearers of the next generation of jazz. He also strives to continue passing down the knowledge and exposure of jazz music to the youth, just like his father, late trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Kasan is a recent graduate of University of Michigan, and Michigan State University. During his time in jazz school, he was mentored by a plethora of jazz giants such as Benny Green, Robert Hurst, Andrew Bishop, Rodney Whitaker, and Randy Gillespie. He has shared the stage with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Theo Crocker, Karriem Riggins, Nicholas Payton, Preservation Hall, and also toured with Jazz @ Lincoln Center w/ Wynton Marsalis. He was also featured on Aretha Franklin's homecoming concert in Detroit. Kasan's debut album is set to release early 2024

The WJZZ Legacy Jazz Series was established in August 2021 to provide a platform to showcase globally recognized and emerging jazz artists. After a two year residency at the Hotel St. Regis Detroit, in August 2023, the Legacy Jazz Series moved to Aretha's Jazz Cafe inside the historic Music Hall in Detroit.
The Legacy Jazz Series has been home to many of our hometown favorites including Alex Harding and The Organ Nation, Marcus Elliott, Alan Denard, Vincent Chandler, Mike Malis, Marion Hayden, Tarek Gardiner, Olivia Van Goor, Faye Bradford, Charles Prophet Jr, James Russell, Matt LoRuss, Will Hill Trio and Taylor Symms.
