In the Tradition (ITT) Jazz Ensemble returns to Aretha’s Jazz Café on Saturday, December 30, 2023, for a Kwanzaa Celebration, marking the 57th year of the African-American holiday.

ITT will perform original compositions, composed by Band Leader Olujimi Tafataona, and jazz standards that speak to the lasting legacy of America’s only original art form—jazz.

ITT Percussionist Kefentse Chike, also a professor African American Studies at Wayne State University, will speak briefly on the significance of Kwanzaa and its Seven Principles. Nia, a Swahili word that translates to “purpose” in English, is the fifth principle, recognized on the fifth day of Kwanzaa, which is December 30th.
