Fusion Reunion w/Lenny White & Ralphe Armstrong02/04/12
8 Pm, 10 Pm
Jazz Cafe proudly presents the two tastiest shows of the New Year so far- as legendary Jazz Fusion drummer, Lenny White teams up with old Detroit pal, bassist, Ralphe Armstrong for The Fusion Reunion with 2 sets on Saturday, February 4th at 8PM and 10 PM
The Fusion Reunion consists of White & Armstrong on drums and bass respectively and also includes HENRY GIBSON on piano, ALEX COLISTA on Sax, and on guitar, PAUL KRAMER.
A versatile drummer, New York born, Lenny White is still best known for being part of Chick Corea's Return To Forever in the 1970's. Self-taught on drums, White basically started his career on top, playing regularly with Jackie McLean (1968) and recording the legendary and innovative album, "Bitches Brew" with Miles Davis in 1969.
White was soon working with some of the who's who of jazz including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Stanley Clarke and Stan Getz among others. As a member of Return To Forever during 1973-76, White gained a strong reputation as one of the top fusion drummers, but he was always versatile enough to play in many settings.
Lenny White's latest album, "Anomaly" was released in 2010
White has played with Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Geri Allen, Gato Barbieri, Gil Evans, Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis, and Stan Getz.
Detroiter, Ralphe Armstrong was classically trained during his four years at Michigan's Interlochen School of Fine Arts, where he studied the Josef Harvey method; later, he transferred his acoustic technique to electric while also putting up some ferocious funk on a trio of powerful mid-'70s Mahavishnu Orchestra recordings: Apocalypse, Visions of the Emerald Beyond, and Inner Worlds.
Following his three-year Mahavishnu stint, Armstrong joined a stellar fusion group led by violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, a former Mahavishnu band mate who had also appeared on Apocalypse and Visions of the Emerald Beyond. Ralphe can be heard ripping it up alongside guitarists Allan Holdsworth and Daryl Stuermer and drummer Steve Smith on Ponty's 1977 landmark, Enigmatic Ocean.
